Assignment #48 (Test 12 Preview)

Wednesday, October 30, 2013

Wednesday 10/30

Today we rolled up our sleeves and dove headfirst into the quadratic formula with Notes #30. This is now the fourth different technique we've learned to solve quadratic equations, and you need to be able to handle all four proficiently.

We'll also be having a "surprise" quiz tomorrow with exactly one question. Please make sure to memorize the quadratic formula tonight so you'll be able to get the one question on tomorrow's quiz correct.

Solutions: Using the Quadratic Formula answer key

Tuesday, October 29, 2013

Tuesday 10/29

We learned how to solve quadratic equations today by completing the square with Notes #28.

This is the third different method we've learned to solve quadratic equations (anything that could be written as
ax2 + bx + c = 0
). You
need to be able to handle all three methods proficiently.

Homework #46: Completing the Square worksheet
Solutions: Completing the Square answer key

Monday, October 28, 2013

Monday 10/28

Today we reviewed solving quadratic equations in Notes #28.  Remember that math is cumulative and builds on itself. It is important that you are able to solve every type of quadratic equation presented today.

Thursday 10/24

Today we worked on the Test 11 Preview worksheet in class. Tomorrow's test will cover everything we've learned in class this week (solving quadratic equations by factoring and solving with square roots). Be sure to study to arrive fully prepared!

Wednesday, October 23, 2013

Wednesday 10/23

We continued our pursuit of solving quadratic equations by solving them using square roots today, using Notes #27.

In general, you solve each problem just like a normal linear equation, but use square root to "undo" the square on the variable in step #4. Remember, that quadratic equations will always have two solutions, so make sure you find both of them tonight on your homework.

Solutions: Solving Equations with Square Roots answer key

Tuesday, October 22, 2013

Tuesday 10/22

Today we used Notes #26 to learn how to solve quadratic equations by factoring.

Remember to factor the quadratic equation first, then use the Zero Product Property (ab = 0) to find the two values that make each set of parenthesis equal to zero. If you need some help, please pop into The Community and ask around.

Homework #42: TB pg 454 (#1-19, 27-31 odd)
Please check your answers in the back of the book when finished.

Monday 10/21

We reviewed factoring quadratic expressions today using Notes #25, which gets us prepared for additional work with quadratic expressions later this week.

Homework #41: Factoring Review worksheet
Solutions: factoring key

Thursday 10/17

Today we went over last night's homework in detail, answering questions and clearing up any confusion anyone had, then began working on a multiple choice preview worksheet for tomorrow's Common Assessment #3.

Wednesday 10/16

We had a guest teacher today while I was at the district office all day. In class, we began working on the Common Assessment 3 Preview worksheet to get us prepared for the upcoming Common Assessment 3.

If you're stuck on any of the questions, you could always ask The Community for help.

Tuesday 10/15

We solved word problems that were specific to Common Assessment #3 in Notes #24.  Remember to begin studying for Common Assessment #3 now.

Homework #38: Finish the Common Assessment #3 Word Problems worksheet
Solutions: Common Assessments #3 Problems answer key

Monday, October 14, 2013

Monday 10/14

We began dismantling word problems with Notes #23 today in order to get prepared for Common Assessment #3 on Friday. Remember to use the steps outlined at the side to help you break the problems down into workable pieces.

Remember all solutions to tonight's homework must contain both an equation and a final answer. It's not "right" unless it has both.

There are a few phrasing typos on the worksheet. If they're confusing you, feel free to take a look at the fixed worksheet uploaded here to double-check the correct phrasing.

Wednesday 10/9

Today we continued working on solving inequalities, using Notes #22 to investigate some more challenging problems than those that we tackled yesterday.

The most important thing to remember is that if you divide or multiply both sides by a negative, you have to flip the inequality symbol. Otherwise, solve it just like you would an equation.

Homework #35: TB pg 147 (#51-67 odd, 74, 77)
Please check your answers in the back of the book when finished.

Tuesday, October 8, 2013

Tues 10/8

We dove into solving inequalities today, using notes #21 to do so. Remember to flip the inequality symbol if you divide or multiply both sides by a negative.

Today we took notes #19 which revisited solving equations, focusing on equations with variables on both sides, equations with fractions, and equations with decimals.  The same four rules that helped us solve equations with integers can be applied to equations with fractions and decimals. Once again, you are encouraged to memorize them.
